BiographieBiography

Adjustable biography, because I do not see art, cinema, anthropology and publishing as separate fields, but as the different practices of a single research, in which making, thinking and passing on proceed from one and the same gesture. My cross-disciplinary path is a working method, founded on the refusal of the modern hierarchy between practice and theory, as well as of the compartmentalisation of knowledge produced by (over)specialisation. Choose the length and the facet that interest you.

Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988) builds dispositifs — video installations, films, photographs, paintings — that question who has the right to see and who has the right to speak. Trained at ENSBA Lyon and HEAD (Geneva).

Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988, lives and works in France) builds dispositifs: architectures that organise the work as a whole, from the shoot to the spectator's experience in space. His practice — photography, painting, performance, sculpture and video installation — carries out a critique in act more than in statement, and runs through three fields: image and surveillance regimes, the place of the living, and the sites of decision-making. His central work, Contrat Social (La désinstitutionnalisation) (2019-2025), handed an actual seat of power to two activists in wheelchairs for one day. His work has been shown at the Rencontres Bandits-Mages (Bourges, 2015), in the exhibition Labor in a Single Shot at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin, 2015) and at the Festival des Cabanes at the Villa Medici (2022).

Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988, lives and works in France) builds dispositifs. By this he means far more than shooting protocols: architectures that organise the work as a whole — what takes place in front of the camera, what plays out around it, down to the way the spectator's body experiences it in the exhibition space. His installations are dissonant echoes of the stagecraft of power: more than denouncing, they operate.

Trained at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon (DNAP, 2010) and at HEAD Geneva (Work.Master, 2013), he took part in 2012 in Harun Farocki and Antje Ehmann's Labor in a Single Shot workshop and assisted the artist Pedro Reyes at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel. His work has since unfolded across three fields. The regimes of images, first: performances facing surveillance cameras (Vidéo-dessin, 2009-2011), panoramic films in which the centre of the image disappears, eight years of interviews with a search engine (Entretiens avec Google, 2009-2016). The place of the living, next: films and installations shot in forests and at river confluences (Jonction(s), Allure Sylvestre), and a painting cycle based on a model that turns the globe inside out like a glove (Gaïa). The sites of decision-making: from the installation Incident (2015) to Contrat Social (La désinstitutionnalisation) (2019-2025), his central work, which handed an actual seat of power to two activists in wheelchairs for one day, assisted by real senior civil servants and surrounded by improvising actors.

His work has been shown at LiveInYourHead (SLURM, Geneva, 2012, curated by Christophe Kihm and Marc-Olivier Wahler), at Le Corbusier's Maison Blanche (Toucher avec les yeux, La Chaux-de-Fonds, 2012), at the Rencontres Bandits-Mages (Bourges, 2015), in the exhibition Labor in a Single Shot at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin, 2015), at La Mèche (Multivers, Toulouse, 2018) and at the Festival des Cabanes at the Villa Medici (French Academy in Rome, 2022). He spent time at the Polygone Étoilé (Marseille, 2017) and was in residence at Mains d'Œuvres (Saint-Ouen, 2018). Until 2019, he signed his works under the name Rio Vàn Eir.

Trained in Bruno Latour's Master's in Experimentation in Arts and Politics (SPEAP), he now draws from his practice a theory of instaurative documentary: neither to capture nor to invent: to instaure.

A filmmaker and anthropologist, Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988) practises instaurative documentary: his films do not record a situation, they bring one into being. His most ambitious film, Contrat Social (2019-2025), handed a day of government to two activists in wheelchairs, inside an actual seat of the State.

A filmmaker and anthropologist, Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988) practises what he calls instaurative documentary: his films do not record a situation that would have taken place without them — they bring one into being, then answer its demands. He turned to cinema as a continuation of his video installations. Trained in the documentary filmmaking master's programme at Lussas (2015), he founded L'Atelier à Images the same year, and has produced all his films with it: Perdus en mer… (2014), 1689 (2015), ERRATA (2018), Allure Sylvestre (2019-2020), Jours Blancs (2021-2022) and Contrat Social (La désinstitutionnalisation) (2019-2025), his most ambitious work, shot at the Hôtel de Noirmoutier: two activists in wheelchairs govern for one day, surrounded by real senior civil servants and by improvising actors.

Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988) is a filmmaker and anthropologist. He turned to cinema from 2010 onwards, as an extension of his video installations, and made his first short film, produced by HEAD, in 2011. His films belong to what he calls instaurative documentary: they do not record a situation that would have taken place without them, they bring one into being, then answer its demands. He gives rules, he does not direct: it is the rules that ground the freedom.

Trained in the documentary filmmaking master's programme at Lussas (Université Grenoble 3, 2015) after ENSBA Lyon and HEAD Geneva (where he assiduously attended the Cinéma du réel department), he passed through the workshops of Olivier Zabat, Harun Farocki (Labor in a Single Shot, 2012), Tariq Teguia and Claudio Pazienza.

His filmography includes Perdus en mer… (documentary, 2014), 1689 (ethnofiction, 2015), ERRATA (fiction, 2018), Allure Sylvestre (documentary, 2020), Jours Blancs (fiction, 2022) and Contrat Social (La désinstitutionnalisation) (documentary, 2025). Several of these films lead a double life: one version for the cinema, one installed version for the exhibition space — Perdus en mer… runs eight minutes in the cinema and one hour as an installation. The instaurative gesture itself took shape as early as Perdus en mer… and 1689: ten years of maturation before Contrat Social. That work, his most ambitious to date, brought together twenty-six people on 19 November 2022 at the Hôtel de Noirmoutier: two activists in wheelchairs governed for one day, assisted by real senior civil servants and surrounded by improvising actors. The film records what no observation could have reached: the passage from a voice that testifies to a voice that decides.

Also a cinematographer and colourist, he has worked on the image of films by other directors selected at the Berlinale, FID Marseille, Visions du Réel and Sheffield Doc/Fest. Until 2019, he signed his films under the name Rio Vàn Eir. He is drawing from his practice a book in progress, Fictionner le réel, a theory of instaurative documentary.

An artist-researcher, Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988) has been an associate researcher at the Centre Max Weber (UMR 5283) since 2019, within the Visual Sociologies group. Trained in anthropology at Université Lumière Lyon 2 (bachelor's and first-year master's) and in visual arts at HEAD Geneva (master's), then under Bruno Latour, he develops an experimental visual anthropology in which the dispositif is the method: his films do not document existing situations — they bring situations into being, then study what those situations produce. He has presented his work and research on visual anthropology at the FRESH conference “Film et recherche en sciences humaines et sociales” at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Bretagne, and at the conference “De l'Image à la Société: questionner la société par l'image, questionner l'image par les sciences sociales” at the Centre Pierre Naville, Université d'Évry Paris-Saclay.

Ses communications comprennent « How to Represent Porosity to Fill Strategical Emptiness?

Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988) is an artist, filmmaker and researcher. First a specialist in the sociology of art and in the representation of the living in contemporary art, he has since been working towards a visual and sensory anthropology — of speech and of recognition. An associate researcher at the Centre Max Weber (UMR 5283) since 2019, within the Visual Sociologies group, he develops there an experimental visual anthropology in which the dispositif is the method: neither to capture nor to invent: to instaure. His films and installations do not document existing situations; they bring situations into being, then study what those situations produce: displacements of speech, reversals of position, reconfigurations of the sensible.

Trained in the social sciences alongside his art education from 2008 onward, he began in 2010 a research project on the representation of “nature” and of the living in contemporary art (the first inquiry from which, through the critique of representation, his instaurative method derives). Holding a bachelor's degree in social sciences (anthropology) and a first-year research master's (Université Lumière Lyon 2, 2011-2012), then a master's degree in visual arts (HEAD Geneva, 2013), he went on to train in the documentary filmmaking master's programme at Lussas (2015), before joining the Master's in Experimentation in Arts and Politics (SPEAP), where he studied under Bruno Latour (2021-2022).

His papers include “How to Represent Porosity to Fill Strategical Emptiness?” (with Lena Quelvennec, Critical Zone conference, Warburg-Haus, Hamburg, 2019 — closing lecture by Bruno Latour; published in the proceedings), “Nothing to See: Image Disappearance and Panoramic Movies” (Terror on Tour, Trinity College Dublin, 2019) and “L'extra-ordinaire comme méthode d'enquête par le cinéma” (De l'image à la société conference, Université Paris-Saclay, 2023). He taught documentary cinema at Université Grenoble Alpes (2018-2020).

His main recent fieldwork, Contrat Social (La désinstitutionnalisation) (2019-2025), installed two disabled activists in an actual seat of power for a day of government: the dispositif produces there what no observation could have reached: the passage from a testimonial voice, which can only give an account of lived experience, to a decisional voice, which arbitrates and prescribes. Inquiry is understood here with John Dewey: it does not uncover an intact reality, it transforms the situation it observes and aims, ultimately, at giving spectators back the means of becoming the anthropologists of their own world. From this he is drawing a book in progress, Fictionner le réel : pour une poétique de l'enquête anthropologique, a theory of instaurative documentary built from fifteen years of film-as-inquiry practice.

Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988), artist, filmmaker and anthropologist, draws from twenty years of practice and inquiry a theory of instaurative documentary. Two essays are in progress: Fictionner le réel and L'impasse artiste. He published the artist's book Débatailles (2014) and is currently turning an unmade film project into a graphic novel.

For Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988), writing is a facet of the artistic work itself: the theory is drawn from the works. Two essays are in progress. Fictionner le réel : pour une poétique de l'enquête anthropologique builds, out of twenty years of films and installations, a theory of instaurative documentary (a cinema that does not capture an existing situation but brings one into being). L'impasse artiste takes on the romantic mystification of the figure of the artist and argues for an art of effects and commons. He has published the artist's book Débatailles (2014) and several conference papers. He is currently turning an unmade film project into a graphic novel: CRIZZ.

For Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988), writing is a facet of the artistic work itself. An artist, filmmaker and associate researcher at the Centre Max Weber (UMR 5283), he theorises his practice the way others keep a studio: the theory is drawn from the works and not the other way round.

Two essays are in progress. Fictionner le réel : pour une poétique de l'enquête anthropologique, subtitled Le dispositif comme méthode pour une anthropologie visuelle expérimentale, builds, out of twenty years of films and installations, a theory of instaurative documentary: a cinema that neither captures a situation that would have taken place without it nor invents one; it brings a situation into being, then answers its demands. The essay matures a gesture first sketched in his HEAD (Geneva) thesis in 2013, devoted to cinematic dispositifs and anthropological paradigms, and tested since by the works themselves, up to Contrat Social (La désinstitutionnalisation) (2025). L'impasse artiste : pour une autre approche de la figure de l'artiste takes on the romantic mystification of the artist and argues for an art of effects and commons: the critical charge that Débatailles carried in act, the essay carries in theory.

This work of clarifying ideas through writing runs through the whole trajectory: a first thesis, Faire un monde (ENSBA Lyon, 2009); the artist's book Débatailles (micro-edition, 2014), a riposte by détournement to the power games of the film world (who gets to decree that “this is not cinema”?); film and art criticism, and several published papers. He is currently turning an unmade film script into a graphic novel, CRIZZ. He writes in French and in English, and holds the essay to be a form in its own right, at the junction of art, cinema and the social sciences. Until 2019, he signed some of his publications under the name Rio Vàn Eir.

Damien Pelletier-Brun (b. 1988, lives and works in France) is an artist, filmmaker and anthropologist. Since 2006, he has built dispositifs: architectures that organise the work as a whole — what takes place in front of the camera, what plays out around it, upstream and downstream of the shoot, down to the spectator's experience in space. His installations are dissonant echoes of the stagecraft of power: a critique in act more than in statement. One question runs through this work: who has the right to see, who has the right to speak — who counts.

Trained at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon (DNAP, 2010), at HEAD Geneva (2013), in the documentary filmmaking master's programme at Lussas (2015) and in the Master's in Experimentation in Arts and Politics (SPEAP) at Sciences Po Paris, where he studied under Bruno Latour (2021-2022), he took part in 2012 in Harun Farocki and Antje Ehmann's Labor in a Single Shot workshop and assisted Pedro Reyes at dOCUMENTA (13). His work first interrogates the regimes of images and of knowledge — surveillance, panoramic films in which the centre disappears, eight years of interviews with a search engine — then makes room for the living, from forests and river confluences to the Gaïa painting cycle, before reaching the sites of decision-making. His central work, Contrat Social (La désinstitutionnalisation) (2019-2025), produced by L'Atelier à Images, handed an actual seat of power to two activists in wheelchairs for one day, assisted by real senior civil servants and surrounded by improvising actors: the film records the passage from a voice that testifies to a voice that decides.

His work has been shown at the Rencontres Bandits-Mages (Bourges, 2015), in the exhibition Labor in a Single Shot at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin, 2015), at La Mèche (Toulouse, 2018) and at the Festival des Cabanes at the Villa Medici (2022); his research, at the Critical Zone conference (Warburg-Haus, Hamburg, 2019, published paper), at Trinity College Dublin (2019) and at Université Paris-Saclay (2023). An associate researcher at the Centre Max Weber (UMR 5283) since 2019, he is writing two essays, Fictionner le réel and L'impasse artiste, and turning an unmade film project into a graphic novel. Until 2019, he signed his works under the name Rio Vàn Eir. His method holds in one phrase: neither to capture nor to invent: to instaure.
